Explained - Nutraceuticals & the Oatinol® Delivery System

Explained - The 13 Active Nutraceuticals in Immune Aid for Horses

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Beta Carotene (Vitamin A Precursor)

A safe and effective way to provide the building blocks for vitamin A, which is vital for vision, appetite and growth.

Curcumin

An active ingredient of the spice, turmeric. It is a natural and powerful antioxidant and supports the normal anti-inflammatory action of the body.

Glutamic Acid

A natural flavour enhancer and an important nutritional support for natural gut health during times of stress.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Essential for the manufacture of collagen and a source of sulphur, which helps to form cross links with other molecules that maintain the strength and integrity of connective tissues.

Oligosaccharides (Fructo, Galacto & Mannan) (Prebiotic)

Support the immune system by maintaining naturally high levels of macrophage activity to block harmful organisms being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids provide the precursors of anti-inflammatory regulators and are a daily source of essential fat components, providing the correct dietary balance with pro-inflammatory regulatory component omega 6. Omega 3's are also found in large concentrations in spermatozoa and are essential for maintaining cell wall integrity and preventing moisture/oil loss from the skin.

Piperine Black Pepper Extract

Piperine black pepper extract is a natural nutritional addition that supports the retention in the metabolism of some active nutraceuticals e.g. curcumin.

Selenium (inc. Protected)

An important antioxidant that works synergistically with vitamin E.

Toxin Binders

A blend of microscopic absorbent compounds that aid the natural expulsion of antagonists found in feed and the environment.

Vitamin C

Essential for the production of collagen in the body that forms the matrix of connective tissues in mammals. It directly affects the level of tissue growth and development and the maintenance of the body's immune system.

Vitamin D3

Crucial for bone development. Also important for the immune system, fertility and the release of insulin.

Vitamin E

A biological antioxidant and essential for healthy reproductive, muscular, circulatory, nervous and immune systems.

Yeast Cultures

Help to stabilise the pH in the foregut and encourage the development of beneficial fibre digesting bacteria. Significantly improve the digestibility of phosphorus from normal feed.

Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:

  • Maintain gut cell integrity.
  • Maintain the lining of the gut.
  • Support the immune system.
  • Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers

Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.

Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants

Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.

Oat Derived Beta Glucans

Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.

Phospholipids

Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What Makes Immune Aid for Horses Unique?

Immune Aid not only contains the Oatinol Delivery System™ but it also supplies a whole host of prebiotics and yeast (to scavenge oxygen and improve the immune function). A high proportion of turmeric helps add a significant amount of antioxidants alongside various toxin binders which bind up natural toxins in the environment. Piperine is also included to aid the absorption of various beneficial nutrients and support the immune system.

The Oatinol Delivery System™ allows for the improved absorption of nutrients by blocking pathogens and supporting the immune system, maintaining cell integrity and gut lining and finally aiding the absorption of key ingredients.

Who Should Immune Aid be Fed to?

Immune Aid should be fed to horses and ponies that show signs of a challenged immune system including sarcoids, poor coats and parasite pressure.

Natural health manifests itself in the physical appearance of your horse or pony. A sleek coat, bright eyes and clean airways all demonstrate the effectiveness of the equine's immune system.

Can Immune Aid be Fed with Balancers?

Yes absolutely, it is specifically designed to be fed alongside our own balancer Equilibra and can also be fed alongside our vitamin and mineral supplement OneCup.

What is the Energy Level/DE of Immune Aid?

12.6 DE (September 2023)

Where Can I Buy Immune Aid for Horses?

Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. If your local feed store is not currently stocking Immune Aid please let us know and we may be able to help. Alternatively our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.

Does Immune Aid Contain a High Level of Starch?

The starch levels in Immune Aid are important for helping absorption but they are fairly low, especially given the typical feed rate of just 100gm/day.

Does Immune Aid Contain Wheat?

No absolutely not. It does contain horse (black) oats, which have less starch than feed oats. They also provide slower release energy when compared with feeds like wheat or maize, which are much higher in starch and can be dangerous for an equine.

Can Immune Aid be Fed With Your Other Supplements?

Yes absolutely.

Is Immune Aid Suitable for a Mare in Foal?

Absolutely fine. It is advisable to support the mare's immune system and overall health & wellbeing where possible.

Can Immune Aid Help my Growing Foal?

Yes, Immune Aid is particularly beneficial to a foal or young equine the immune system is particularly vulnerable after birth especially for the first 6 months where the foal relies nearly entirely off the Mare to build up immunity. It has noted to be particularly beneficial for Sarcoids, Parasites and Compromised Immune systems.

Is Immune Aid FEI Compliant?

Immune Aid for Horses currently contains hemp meal, which is integral to the product's absorption capabilities. It does contain a very low level of tetrahydrocannabinol but this passes through the horse's body very quickly. If used we would advise to stop feeding from 2 days before any event as it is not currently FEI compliant.

Is Immune Aid Suitable for Horses with Ulcers?

Yes Immune Aid can be fed to horses with ulcers. It contains prebiotics, a toxin binder and yeasts (which scavenge oxygen in the digestive tract therefore reducing a key resource for unwanted bacteria). It also focuses on the key line of defence through higher vitamin E and selenium, which are particularly needed when an immune system is compromised. Immune Aid also focuses on the absorption across cell membranes in the digestive tract to make sure nutrients in feed are fully utilised.

We would also recommend X-Lam Aid for Horses. This product contains many buffering agents, which can be extremely useful for helping to counteract ulcers, as well as prebiotics and ingredients which improve absorption.

Is Immune Aid Suitable for Horses with Asthma?

Yes Immune Aid is suitable for horses with asthma.

Environmental factors such as air pollution and allergens tend to be the main cause of asthma, causing the airways in the lungs to swell with additional mucus. Unfortunately, avoiding triggers is not always easy - some types of verge grasses can even cause a reaction in some animals.

Asthma can also often brought on by mycotoxins and molds commonly found in the environment or on food. Hygiene is paramount to minimising any risks but mycotoxin binders like those found in Immune Aid can also help the body to expel harmful toxins like these.

Boosting the immune system and its responses can also really help. Selenium and Vitamin E are both critical as anti-oxidants and helping to detoxify the after effects of immune response.

Excessive use of antibiotics, particularly in the younger years, can also lead to the development of asthma. Repopulating the gut can go some way to helping the immune system recover from the damage caused. Immune Aid contains prebiotics to help prevent harmful organisms being absorbed into the bloodstream, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids and Curcumin to support the body's own anti-inflammatory responses.

Is Immune Aid Suitable for Horses with Sweet Itch?

Yes asbolutely, Immune Aid contains anti-inflammatories and antioxidants which can help your horse to deal with allergens and irritants in the environment and support their natural immune responses. In fact, Curcumin helps discourage parasites including ticks, mites and fleas, and is a great first line of defence. It’s also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, which help to maintain a protective barrier in the skin.
