Explained - Nutraceuticals & the Oatinol® Delivery System

Explained - The 13 Active Nutraceuticals in X-Lam Aid for Horses

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Arginine

Important for dilating blood vessels and improving blood flow. An essential amino acid for growth and other key biological functions.

Calcium

Essential as a major constituent of bones and required for muscle contractions (all movement), cell membrane function and enzyme regulation.

Collagen Matrix

Collagen is the body's natural glue that is crucial for all connective tissue, including the base membrane of the hoof. Collagen is essential for connecting and supporting tendons, muscles, cartilage and ligaments, particularly the anchoring points where they are attached to structures like bones and hooves.

Cinnamon

An active spice with prebiotic effects, supporting the digestive system.

Curcumin

An active ingredient of the spice, turmeric. It is a natural and powerful antioxidant and supports the normal anti-inflammatory action of the body.

Folic Acid (Vit B9)

Important for growth and development and helps to produce healthy blood cells.

Glucosamine (Vegetable Source)

Gives cartilage its structure and shock absorbing qualities. It is involved in the formation of cartilage, tendons, skin, bone and ligaments.

Natural Buffering Material

Natural buffering material helps to stabilise pH levels in the hindgut at around 6.5-7 to support friendly bacteria that can be susceptible to acidic conditions. The pH in the digestive tract can be lowered by sugar overload, so restricting intake and providing natural acid buffering aids the microflora and gut wall integrity.

Oligosaccharides (Mannan) (Prebiotic)

Support the immune system by maintaining naturally high levels of macrophage activity to block harmful organisms being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids provide the precursors of anti-inflammatory regulators and are a daily source of essential fat components, providing the correct dietary balance with pro-inflammatory regulatory component omega 6. Omega 3's are also found in large concentrations in spermatozoa and are essential for maintaining cell wall integrity and preventing moisture/oil loss from the skin.

Piper Nigrum (Black Pepper)

Supports the retention in the metabolism of some active nutraceuticals e.g. curcumin.

Vitamin B6

Supports protein metabolism, growth and cognitive function.

Vitamin B12

Essential for the utilisation of amino acids; involved in the production of red blood cells and the integrity of the nervous system.

Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:

  • Maintain gut cell integrity.
  • Maintain the lining of the gut.
  • Support the immune system.
  • Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers

Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.

Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants

Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.

Oat Derived Beta Glucans

Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.

Phospholipids

Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What Makes X-Lam Aid Unique?

X-Lam Aid includes alkali buffers which help to mitigate issues caused by high sugars and low fibre, especially from late spring to summer and caused by erratic rainfall patterns.

It also features our proprietary Oatinol Delivery System™, meaning it supports the horse's digestive system when it is under stress from issues like Cushing’s, ulcers and laminitis.

Oatinol™ allows for the improved absorption of nutrients by blocking pathogens and supporting the immune system, maintaining cell integrity and the gut lining, and finally aiding the absorption of key ingredients.

Who Should X-Lam Aid be Fed to?

X-Lam Aid should be fed to horses and ponies that are susceptible to the challenges associated with high fructose (sugar) levels found in seasonal grass growth. In fact, it could be argued that all horses could benefit.

X-Lam Aid includes alkali buffers and is designed to help stabilise pH levels. It is a very effective supplement in the spring/summer when grass sugar levels are high and fibre is low.

Our equine feeding programme is designed to improve the body's efficient use of feed and to support optimum digestive health. X-Lam Aid plays a vital part in supporting your horse's gut and helping to reduce the issues caused by excess acidity. Suitable forage should also always be available to feed as saliva is the best buffering material for acid.

What is the Energy Level/DE of X-Lam Aid?

10.9 DE (November 2022)

Can I Try a Sample Before I Buy?

Yes of course, if you would like a sample of one of our products please just get in touch.

Where Can I Buy X-Lam Aid?

Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. If your local feed store is not currently stocking X-Lam Aid please let us know and we may be able to help. Alternatively our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.

Can You Feed Too Much X-Lam Aid?

Not really it would just be unnecessary additional cost past a certain point. The product is designed to be fed at the feed rates given, although in some cases it may be appropriate to feed up to 300gm/day.

Is X-Lam Aid Economical to Feed?

X-Lam Aid is a very cost effective supplement for reducing the chance of ulcers and buffering acidic conditions, particularly in the early spring with high grass sugars.

Is X-Lam Aid GM Free?

Yes, there are no GM ingredients in X-Lam Aid.

Does X-Lam Aid Contain a High Level of Starch?

Given the feed rate, the level of starch in X-Lam Aid is very small. Some starch is required to aid absorption of active ingredients.

Does X-Lam Aid Contain Wheat?

No absolutely not. It does contain horse (black) oats, which have less starch than feed oats. They also provide slower release energy when compared with feeds like wheat or maize, which are much higher in starch and can be dangerous for an equine. X-Lam Aid also contains buffers which help to combat the negative effect of wheat and sugars.

Can X-Lam Aid be Given to a Mare in Foal?

Yes X-Lam Aid is absolutely fine for a mare in foal, and far better than allowing unnecessary pressure on the mare's digestive system, which could pose a risk to the unborn foal.

Does X-Lam Aid Provide Daily Vitamins or Should I Be Feeding a Balancer?

X-Lam Aid doesn't include general vitamins or trace elements and your horse should be having these on a daily basis, particularly through the winter months. You could use either OneCup at 100gms per day or Equilibra Feed Balancer at about 500gm per day.

Equilibra provides a lot of extra digestive support; toxin binders, yeast cultures, prebiotics, omega 3 and antioxidants. However, a higher amount of hard feed is required, so if your horse is on a low calorie diet OneCup will be a good option, as well as being extremely cost effective.
